I made a home for myself in the currently ‘unclaimed’ region of my landmass. Amusing really when you consider it is the only unclaimed land mass on earth and I am claiming it. Got a nice, very large, igloo. It’s got three floors and everything I could ever need. Well until the mid to late 1900s when I constructed a glass portion including a green house and an area for guests. Some of them were complaining it was cold. Oh! Most of the glass is frosted too. And then I built a third building to accompany my Igloo and Glass building. That one is more modernized. I even have a power generator and TV. It was only added about ten years ago mind you. Reception sucks so I stick to DVDs.
Well my earlier years I spent alone. I watched from a distance as expeditions came and went, not all of them American. In 1911 they even made it as far as the South Pole. I still wasn’t approaching that. A second one made it a month later too!! Yeah, I still kept my distance. I was such a coward back then. Well, actually I was used to being alone, so It wasn’t like I loved the idea of talking to these strangers. What would they have made of a man living in the frozen wastelands of Antarctica? Well...teenager. I was a teenager then. Still look damn young today. I couldn’t be thought to be any older than seventeen. Though, I’ve been claiming to be older for this whole New World Academy gig. Shhh...don’t tell.
Right, back to the story. The first time I approached was an American Expedition led by a guy named Richard Byrd. I approached in 1929. That was when I first met another Nation. Well...to clarify, I am not a nation but he was! I started paying more attention from then on to expeditions and scientific bases. Snatched up a few cool things when I got the chance. I started to build up my home with new objects and technologies. Not that it helped much. I still spent most of my time out messing around and enjoying the snow and ice. Perhaps that is why I can manipulate ice so well. My power got plenty of use, that’s for sure.
Thirty years of scavenging later, and I found myself in Washington, DC. Wait...yeah that was a big jump. Uh..several countries had taken an interest scientifically in me over the years and wanted to sign an agreement. It was being signed in Washington, so after hearing about it from Alfred, I wandered off to be there for it so I could hopefully meet some other nations. Not to mention that this new Treaty concerned me greatly. Hell it was even called the Antarctic Treaty. It was signed on December 1st, 1959 by twelve nations.
The twelve nations were the United Kingdom, New Zealand, France, Norway, Australia, Chile, Agentina, United States,
1908: UK
1923: New Zealand
1924: France
1929: Norway
1933: Australia
1939: Norway again...
1940: Chile
1943: Argentina
That’s when the countries who signed set up shop in particular strips and areas. They use the word ‘claimed’ but I think that’s the wrong word for it. Isn’t Norway greedy? Well either way Argentina, Chile and UK claims overlap. And Brazil has an area it likes but it hasn’t ‘claimed’. According to the treaty Peru, America, South Africa and now Russia in place of the Soviet Union all have rights to claim. But it’s funny, the treaty prevents them from claiming because “no new claims shall be asserted while the treaty is in force” but says they have the “right to claim”. Sucks to be them...
The treaty says they can’t do military operations on my land, they have the right to share findings and that sovereignty is a pain in my ass. Well, actually the wording says the Treaty “does not recognize, dispute, nor establish territorial sovereignty claims”. What does that even mean!? Can they or can’t they claim sovereignty. I guess since I don’t answer to a king or queen they can’t but that isn’t what the treaty says. Whatever...uh...OH!
There is a big party thrown every year. Okay. Not a party. A Meeting. But it’s more like a reason to party. All 28 of those who have signed originally and since get to participate in a meeting to decide things about the treaty. There are 21 who also can attend but don’t get a say. Every year the
Did I tell about that time I got to try out a car? No...I don’t think I did. My first car ride was in a Volkswagen Beetle! It was brought by the Austrailians in 1962. Mawson Station parked it out front so I took it for a spin. My driving sucked. It’s better now than it ever was. Then again, they don’t have those cars here anymore.
Hmm..I am running out of things to talk about...OH! I promised to tell you about the plane crash in 1979!! Well, my main economic...uh...anything is in tourism. People like to visit. Well, they used to do fly overs, they still do but they stopped for a while. In 1979 a plane from New Zealand got intimate with Mount Erebus. It was Air new Zealand Flight 901 and it crashed killing 257 people. More people died on my land mass than there is permanent population. Doesn’t happen often to nations apparently. Probably because all the nations have a population. I don’t so I am not an official nation. Though, I am still bigger than most of them. Oh! Fun fact. I am 1.3 times the size of Europe. Awesome right?
You..you didn’t need to know that. Umm...In 2005 I had a chunk the size of California melt and refreeze? It was quite the hot spell. I had a wicked fever. I am sure it was just a common cold...uh...or whatever the equivalent is if you are always cold. Okay...I really am running out of history. Well more recently, as in this year, I moved to Canada temporarily. Brought all my dogs with me and got a place with a yard...Canada was nice enough to assist with that at least. I got hired help...and uh...I am going to school. I never went to elementary school, but I am in College for...one minute I got to look for the papers...hm...Ecology. I figured it was something I wouldn’t know...given I live in an icy wasteland. Not that my greenhouse garden isn’t well kept.
Okay. So that’s my history. What else can I tell you about me. Uh...I live on my own so I am good at stuff like Cooking, Cleaning...I can sew and knit. I make my own clothes a lot. Oh I told you about my driving!! I built my house! I have and can play Piano. I paint a lot too. Obviously I spend lots of time in my Garden. I have to Hunt and Fish if I want meat for dinner. OH! I love Skiing, Skating, Snow Boarding, Tobogganing, Snow Showing, Sledding and Snow Mobiling. And don’t tell anyone, but I have seven dogs too and I use them for sledding. It’s been illegal in Antarctica since 1994. But I am a bit confused as to how that works when I lack a government. Is the treaty going to tell me to get rid of my dogs?
MY DOGS!!! I haven’t told you about my dogs!!! I have a few Siberian Huskies and some Alaskan Malamutes. For those who don’t understand how it works, they operate my sled. So...every Sled has one or two lead dogs, I have one. The Lead dog steers and sets the pace for the other dogs. Meaning the lead has to be smart and have common sense. My lead dog is Atka (CLICK FOR PHOTO). Her name means Spirit Guardian. I picked it quite carefully.
There is also the Point Dogs which follow the Lead dogs. Now, I have only one point dog too. She helps angle my turns. Her name is Sesi (CLICK FOR PHOTO) and she gets along great with Atka. Sesi is one of my younger dogs and her name means snow. After the point dog you have the Team Dogs. They are supposed to be there to help with the grunt work. So Strength and Endurance are important. I have two team dogs side by side. They are pretty inseparable. I have Nanuk (CLICK FOR PHOTO) which means Polar bear and Shesh (CLICK FOR PHOTO) which means brown bear. Both of them are from the same litter.
That just leaves my Wheel dogs. Now I have three wheel dogs, but one is retired. Tanana (CLICK FOR PHOTO) is the one in the middle and her name means Hills. She isn’t young and isn’t old yet. For a wheel dog she is perfect. Wheel dogs have to be calm and comfortable with the sound of the sled. They are strong and steady. So that was why Kapik (CLICK FOR PHOTO) is now too old. His name means Coffee...don’t ask. He’s not as solid as he once was. He’s retired now, but he is still one of my best friends. All of them are. Kapik’s place as a wheel dog was taken up by my newest dog, Kayuh (CLICK FOR PHOTO) which means Mountain. She’s one big dog! She still has some learning to do but she is good at what she does. So those are my dogs.
I can’t think of anything else I need to talk about. So I’ll wrap it up there. I suck at conclusions anyways so this will have to do.[/blockquote][/SIZE]
